8 Fintech Referral Program Examples and How to Design Yours

In this article

A referral bonus can bring you an account that never gets used. The qualification rule decides what you're paying for: a signup, a first payment, a paycheck or money that stays.

These eight fintech programs make different choices. Start with the action that tells you the invited customer has tried your product.

1. Cash App: require a real peer payment

Ask the invited customer to complete the product's core action before paying the referral reward.

Cash App required a referral-code signup, an eligible funding method and a $5 payment to another Cash App account within 14 days. The recipient couldn't be owned by or linked to the sender.

This gives customers a payment to complete while excluding a simple transfer to themselves. Keep the task small enough for someone trying the app for the first time.

2. Robinhood: pay at funded referral milestones

Offer larger rewards at referral milestones to give frequent referrers a next target.

Robinhood counted a referral after the friend opened an investing account and made a successful deposit greater than zero. Stock rewards were $50 at one referral, $150 at three, $800 at ten, $4,000 at 50 and $10,000 at 200.

Rewards had to be claimed within 60 days, with a separate 60-day withdrawal hold on the proceeds. There was no additional milestone reward between checkpoints. Calculate the cost at each level; an average across all referrers can hide expensive thresholds.

3. Freetrade: require funding from both sides

Require both people to fund their accounts when you want referrals from customers who use the product themselves.

Freetrade's two-share promotion required the friend to complete onboarding, a tax form and funding by the deadline. The sender also needed net funding. If the friend withdrew below the required balance before the award, both rewards could be lost.

The shares had a weighted distribution, with higher-value shares less common. Show the likely reward clearly alongside the maximum.

4. Chime: qualify through payroll and card activation

Combine payroll and card activation when the goal is an account customers use for income and spending.

Chime required signup through a referral link, one qualifying direct deposit of at least $200 within 45 days, and physical-card activation within 14 days of that deposit. The friend received $100; the referrer's amount depended on their offer.

This is a sequence customers may finish over several weeks. Show which step remains and its deadline.

5. Wise: let the friend try before the referrer qualifies

Give the friend an immediate product benefit while reserving the referrer's reward for a larger action.

Wise's invite program offered a discount on the friend's first transfer. A smaller transfer could use the discount without meeting the international-transfer threshold for the referrer's reward. The assigned regional offer set the conditions.

The first trial can be easy even when the referral payout requires more use. Explain each person's requirements separately.

6. Monese: pay in two stages

Split the reward when getting started and becoming a regular customer require different amounts of effort.

Monese's first bonus required the friend to open an account, receive and activate a card, and make one qualifying transaction of any amount. A second bonus required a later spending minimum shown in the app.

The first reward gives a new customer an achievable target. The second creates a reason to keep using the account. Watch where customers stop between the two.

7. Wealthfront: match the product the friend chooses

Tie the referral benefit to the account the friend wants to use.

Wealthfront offered a temporary 0.75-percentage-point boost to annual yield on eligible cash up to $150,000, a one-time 0.50% investment deposit match on up to $100,000, or both. Qualification had a 30-day deadline.

The cash benefit depended on balance and duration. The investment match paid in four quarterly installments, with withdrawals reducing future payouts. Budget those offers separately; the deposit incentive guide compares them.

8. Revolut: vary the reward by invitation and market

A variable reward adds a reveal to the referral. Keep the qualifying steps and reward probabilities clear before customers invite anyone.

Revolut supported fixed, variable and tiered referral schedules. The invitation and market determined the version. Some variable offers made the smallest reward much more likely than the largest.

A large maximum can draw attention. The distribution tells customers what they're likely to receive.

Set referral qualification rules before the reward

Decide what each person must do, who earns at each step and when the reward arrives. Include what happens after a refund or withdrawal.

Then check what follows the bonus: another payment, recurring payroll or funds that remain. Those results tell you more about the acquired customer than the referral count alone.

For payroll-specific offers, read direct deposit incentives. For payout, claims and expiry, use the reward program design guide.
